Posted on 9th August 2017

Rotarians and Friends of Rotarians were presented on with an informative talk by CEO of British Polio Fellowship Mr. Ted Hill MBE on August 7, 2017. Mr. Hill spoke about Post Polio Syndrome and the work of the British Polio Fellowship charity which provides support to people living with post polio syndrome

Here some interesting highlights to his presentation:

•Post-Polio Syndrome (PPS) is a condition that affects Polio survivors’ years after recovery from an initial acute attack of the poliomyelitis virus • PPS sufferers are about 120,000, the same as Parkinson’s Disease in the UK

•PPS will become increasingly significant not only here in the UK and Western Europe but even if Polio was to be eradicated worldwide tomorrow, there remains the prospect of PPS worldwide for the next 60-70 years as Polio survivors today struggle with their daily lives

•Founded in 1939, The British Polio Fellowship is the largest charity supporting individuals with the late effects of Polio and Post Polio Syndrome (PPS) in the UK

•The Fellowship provides services such as providing information surrounding the medical aspects of the condition, seeking help and management from the medical profession, assisting members with completion of applications and appeals on their welfare and benefits queries, as well as providing grants for mobility related equipment, heating and holidays.

•They have produced a guide for the management of PPS for the medical profession which has received international acclaim

•The Fellowship is currently working in partnership with M&C Saatchi who are funded by the Bill Melinda Gates Foundation on the One Last Push Campaign.

They will also be partcipating in the upcomming BBC Helpline Appeal which airs on 3rd of Sept at 3:15pm and 6th of Sept at 1pm on BBC 2 can be seen the month of September on Iplayer : http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b094l1qr
